Globus

What is Globus?

Globus is the term used to describe the feeling of a lump in the throat, or the feeling of something stuck in the throat. Globus is a sensation, Even though it may not be health-threatening, the sensation may still be uncomfortable.

How is it diagnosed?

Globus will usually be diagnosed following an examination of your throat in an ENT clinic. If you have been diagnosed with Globus, there is no visible obstruction in the throat.

What might the symptoms be?

There is no single cause for globus. It can be associated with inflammation of the throat from infection or allergies. Globus may also be increased by factors that affect the muscles in the throat, these factors could be related to stress or worries.

Why are these symptoms there if there is no visible cause?

Sometimes a sensation of pain or discomfort may be a misinterpretation by the pain sensors in the brain.

What are some ways to shift the symptoms of globus?

  • You may want to track your symptoms through the day, and relate this to your food, sleep, work, and your general state of wellbeing.
  • Notice how much fluid you are drinking, is this enough for your body and activity level?
  • If you perceive an increase in throat-clearing or coughing, the following may be helpful: sipping fluid, gentle yawn, and breathing with awareness.

If your symptoms persist, do seek help. This may be a passing symptom, globus can go away when given time. Small changes may have a lasting impact.
